you know how sometimes you’re so afraid to feel happy because you know it’s too soon, you don’t know the person too well, etc.. but you burst with joy inspite?
well.

It wasn’t alot of money, but it’s validation for my work. Thank you all who bought my pictures!
But thank you more, those who believed in me, who celebrate this milestone with me. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Chorus: -------- E F#m Am It was no surface but all feeling E F#m Am Maybe at the time it felt like dreaming Lyrics: ------- Embarrassed possessed and so uncivilised, just take a look at the whites of my eyes, see me now and I will apologise, for me for you we knew they were lies. It makes me angry ashamed but really alive, it may have worked but at what price? What's the point of always looking back, when all you see is more and more junk. It was no surface but all feeling, maybe at the time it felt like dreaming. Maybe richer maybe wiser, seems so easy to not go too far, beg me to stop hate my face I know, and tell me forever just to go. Just one thing before I get to sleep, and nothing here but the stains on my teeth, no not blood just liquid from you, I only wish it was the truth Feel the guilt of a sinner, feel the cold of a winter. It was no surface but all feeling, maybe at the time it felt like dreaming.

In your absence, this song I’ve put on repeat-1, and subsequently fallen in love with.
Free falling… in slow motion, into you.
When do we stop telling ourselves that we should be bigger person, to forgive and move on?
When do we decide that hate must be repaid with hate, and evil deservedly punished?
Today. That day is today.
I’ve got exactly ONE reader aside from myself on feedburner, so I don’t suppose doing such would cause much distress or serve any real purpose.
But I got sick of feedburner not publishing my feeds on time, so I’m taking my feed off feedburner and hosting it locally instead.
So I FINALLY caught Avenue Q at the Esplanade today. I’d listened to the songs so many times for so long, I know 90% of the sung parts in the musical by heart. Was pleasantly surprised that despite the fact that I knew all the jokes before the show even began, it was actually rather enjoyable - proving once again that delivery is half the funny.
The competent Filipino cast performed to a full house, as far as I can see. I wondered how many in the audience identified with the struggles of the characters, given that for many Singaporeans, going for musicals and theatre productions is the upper/upper-middle class thing to do. The ones who’d probably appreciate best are the ones who’re too busy working the night shift to make ends meet to come for the show.
The cast, for most parts, communicated effectively with skilled puppetry and singing. I hardly had to look to the actors for visual cues with the notable exception of Lucy the Slut. There’s only so much you can do to make a puppet look sexy.
Princeton, the protagonist, opens the show fresh out of college, looking for the place to stay. He ends up in Avenue Q because everywhere else is too expensive. He gets laid off even before he starts, and decides to get a Purpose instead of a new job.
The Internet Is For Porn is probably the most famous song from the production, and it was the song that most could identify with, discreetly or otherwise. The piece was peppered with OTT sexual references and lyrics made even more funny by Trekkie Monster’s vigorous… enactments.
Kate’s duet with Princeton in Mix Tape was cute, and perhaps, for some of us, brought back memories of meticulously picking out songs for a mix tape then laboriously dubbing them over from one deck to another. It apparently worked, in this case, as a little later in the musical, we are treated to an extended display of puppet sex not seen since Team America: World Police.
The mirror ball hung from the ceiling was used to great effect during Rod’s dream sequence in the song Fantasies Come True. It was one of those things that made the live experience magic for me, as opposed to simply listening to the CD.
Kate’s solo in There’s a Fine, Fine Line really got to me, and I believe we’ve all had our fair share of putting effort into relationships which we don’t know if it’ll be worth it in the end. She is comforted by Christmas Eve in The More You Ruv Someone, with her warped (but very true) philosophy of how “the more you ruv someone, the more you want to kill them.”
In the end, Princeton still hasn’t found his purpose, but things between him and Kate are looking up. Lucy the Slut embraces Christianity and gets her chastity restored. The show ends with a hopeful number, ‘For Now’ (I’ve written about this before), about how everything (with the exception of death and taxes), good and bad, are only temporary.
Everything in life, is only for now.
p.s. Anyone who wants to watch it (again), let me know!
The live performance. Weak vocals, but worth checking out for the styling. Note the sequinned dresses, hairdo, and extra thick eyeliners!
The music video, for somewhat more palatable singing.
Anthem for the working girl.
What’s up? Change.
